Liposuction for men isn’t new. But it is becoming more accepted. That’s great because, like women, men can attain a better body contour, boosting their self-esteem.
If you’re a male considering liposuction, you should know that plastic surgery for men is on the rise. About 11% of men account for all liposuction surgeries, while 8% of all cosmetic procedures combined are now sought by males. (Other popular procedures include gynecomastia surgery and eyelid lifts.)
While the midsection is a popular area for men to have liposuction (love handles or spare tires, anyone?), it’s not the only one. It can sculpt and enhance various areas for a younger, more attractive look.
Here are the most common body parts men choose for liposuction and what you can expect during and after your liposuction procedure.

Why Men Have Liposuction
Men’s reasons for having liposuction vary. Men may choose it for physical concerns, emotional reasons, or both.
Common reasons cited for males seeking liposuction are:
- Fat on areas of the body that doesn’t respond to lifestyle changes
- Fat on the body makes the individual look and feel “older”
- Desiring a better presentation for the workplace
- Desiring a better presentation for dating
- Enhancement of the look of muscles (muscles that are covered with fat are less visible)
- Preemptive fat removal (aging prevention)
Common Body Areas Where Men Have Liposuction
Some liposuction areas are popular among both men and women. For instance, the belly/abdomen is a highly popular place to have fat removed.
However, men’s concerns can be slightly different from women’s, especially concerning the body.
Some of the most common places men ask for liposuction include the following:
- Abdomen
- Hips (love handles)
- Chin
- Neck
- Thighs/flanks
- Knees
- Chest
- Back
How Liposuction Is Performed
Part of liposuction’s popularity among men is that it can be done as an outpatient procedure. It is considered less invasive than some forms of plastic surgery (though remember that it is still a surgical procedure).
For your liposuction surgery:
- You will be given anesthesia. Usually, this will be local anesthesia; however, general anesthesia can be used if you prefer or if you are undergoing liposuction in multiple areas or combining it with another plastic surgery procedure. Your plastic surgeon will use the safest and most effective method for you.
- A small incision will be made where the fat is to be removed. If possible, your cosmetic surgeon will choose an inconspicuous area, such as a natural fold or crease in the body. Wherever your incision is made, there will be a scar, but this scar will be small and barely noticeable.
- A sterile instrument called a cannula will be inserted into the incision. The surgeon then moves the cannula back and forth to dislodge and remove the fat.
What to Know Before Liposuction
Before you have your liposuction surgery:
- Choose a doctor you can trust. Check the physician’s credentials (such as their medical training) and ask how often they have done this procedure. Ask to see before and after pictures of former patients to get a feel for the surgeon’s style and skill.
- Ask about the liposuction cost. It is not usually covered by insurance. (The exception may be a reconstructive procedure that includes liposuction.) Find out about payment plans so you’re prepared.
- Have realistic expectations. It can make you look firmer and may make you appear younger, but it has limitations. Make sure you discuss these with your doctor.
- Have any pre-surgery tests that your doctor orders.
- Fill prescriptions ahead of time, if possible. Most liposuction patients do not need prescription pain relievers, but your surgeon may recommend certain medications.
- Stop any medications that increase bleeding, but ask your surgeon before doing so.
- Do NOT smoke. Smoking can significantly increase your risk of postoperative complications.
- Have a ride home. You will be uncomfortable.
What to Know After Liposuction
After you have your liposuction surgery:
- Follow ALL of your surgeon’s directions. You will be sent home with a sheet or a website link for instructions, or you will be given these just before your procedure.
- Do NOT smoke.
- Eat a healthy diet. Eating well can aid in your recovery.
- Only exercise when your surgeon gives you the green light.
- Walk short distances. At first, you may only be comfortable walking around your house or apartment. However, while your surgeon will ask you not to workout or lift heavy objects, light activity is necessary to prevent blood clots after surgery.
- Wait a few weeks before you judge your final look. It can take six to eight weeks until the healing process is done.
Having a realistic outlook along with compliance with your plastic surgeon’s instructions can mean an outcome you’ll be proud of. Choose a surgeon you’re comfortable with and who is experienced in men’s liposuction. You’ll be well on your way to the body you’ve been waiting for.
